In the 2024 IPL season, Ashish Kapoor mentioned that Gujarat Titans have been feeling the impact of not having a top-tier bowler like Mohammed Shami, their key bowler in the past two seasons. Despite this setback, he acknowledged the team’s need to explore and consider other available options moving forward.
The assistant coach of the GT team, Ashish Kapoor, recently acknowledged that their team has been feeling the absence of their star fast bowler, Mohammed Shami, in the IPL 2024 season. Shami, who was the leading wicket-taker in the previous season with 28 wickets in 17 matches, is currently sidelined due to a heel surgery he underwent in late February. He is now undergoing rehabilitation at the NCA, and his team is missing his valuable contributions on the field.
Ashish, during a press conference before a match, mentioned that Mohammed Shami’s contribution of four overs has been crucial in the team’s performance this season. He acknowledged that Shami is a top-notch player and his absence would be felt by anyone. However, Ashish also noted that the team needed to explore other options despite missing Shami’s impact on the game.
In Gujarat’s cricket team, they have struggled to find a suitable replacement for Shami during the early overs of the match. Instead, they have heavily depended on the spin trio of Rashid Khan, Noor Ahmad, and Sai Kishore to take wickets for them.
Mohit Sharma, who was a standout performer with 27 wickets in the last edition, has been struggling to make an impact this season. In the recent match between GT and DC, Mohit had a tough time, giving away 73 runs in his 4-over spell. This performance marked the most expensive figures in IPL history for him.
Ashish believes that GT’s bowling has not been a concern, contrasting it with the potential troubles RCB might face in that area. GT is set to play against RCB at the Narendra Modi Stadium on April 28, Sunday.
Ashish mentioned that the team’s bowling has not been a major issue this season, indicating that they might have some other areas of concern but not in their bowling department.
He acknowledged that at this stage of the tournament, all teams have a shot at making it to the playoffs, including RCB, despite their position in the bottom half of the table.
Ashish highlighted the current phase of the tournament as crucial, emphasizing the importance of winning games consistently. He noted that RCB, who have struggled so far, still have a chance if they can win all their remaining matches.
GT’s performance in the tournament has been inconsistent, with 4 wins in 9 matches.
