The 7th Annual Consensus Conference on MGB/OAGB (Mini Gastric Bypass/One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass) recently took place in Goa, India, under the leadership of Dr.Arun Prasad from Apollo Indraprastha Hospital in New Delhi. The conference was a great success, with 250 surgeons from 25 countries coming together to discuss and agree on surgical techniques.
Dr.Prasad highlighted that the main goal of the conference was to establish agreement on surgical approaches to ensure that standardized procedures are followed worldwide. By having a unified approach, the aim is to reduce surgical errors and improve patient outcomes consistently across different surgical settings.
Dr.Robert Rutledge, a well-known surgeon and Honorary President of the MGB-OAGB Club, also emphasized the importance of standardization in surgical practices based on his extensive experience in MGB surgery dating back to 1997.
Dr.Rutledge emphasized how following proven techniques can bring about positive outcomes consistently. He pointed out the significant impact of the conference on developing certification courses for the MGB/OAGB procedures, particularly in the context of treating diabetes.
At the conference, there were some really exciting advancements in bariatric surgery, especially with the Cadaver Surgery Workshops being offered for the first time. Dr.Abhishek Tiwari, a Consultant Surgeon at Apollo Indraprastha Hospital and the Organizing Secretary of the MGB/OAGB Conference, mentioned that attendees got hands-on experience during the workshops.
They used robotic technology to improve their skills in MGB and OAGB procedures. These workshops demonstrated the focus on using innovative surgical techniques, highlighting the precision and safety benefits of robotic-assisted methods.
Dr.Kuldeepak Kullar, the Founding President and Organizing Co-Chairman of the MGB-OAGB Club, emphasized the importance of the Consensus Conference on MGB/OAGB Surgery as a key platform for promoting collaboration and standardization in the field. He highlighted the value of bringing together experts from around the world to ensure consistent and optimal outcomes for patients globally. The success of the workshop has motivated the team to work with international partners to create similar programs.
Dr.Kullar expressed gratitude for the enthusiastic participation in the cadaver workshops and shared plans to share knowledge globally, with a focus on India’s leadership role in advancing surgical education worldwide.
Dr.Prasad announced that leadership responsibilities would be passed on to Dr. Enrique e Luque de Leon from Mexico, recognizing his ability to lead the initiative effectively into the future.
Dr.Enrique, after accepting the role of chairman, shared his excitement and dedication, saying, “I feel privileged to lead this prestigious conference. I am eager to support the worldwide standardization of MGB/OAGB surgery methods and improve patient care.
