Dinesh Karthik is as likely to be included in the T20 World Cup squad as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli

If we consider form, fitness, and pedigree as key factors, then Dinesh Karthik could be just as likely to be included in the T20 World Cup as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

After Royal Challengers Bangalore’s loss to Lucknow Super Giants, Dinesh Karthik had three commercial events scheduled. He attended two shoots and a bat-signing session, despite feeling unsettled. The 38-year-old cricketer maintained professionalism, fulfilling his commitments effortlessly. His inner turmoil remained hidden behind a composed exterior.

Karthik’s disappointment was palpable as he was dismissed for just 4 runs off 8 balls, struggling to make an impact when RCB needed 79 runs off 34 balls against LSG at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Minutes after coming back to the hotel following the defeat, Karthik wasted no time and began looking for a place to practice for the next day, even though it was supposed to be a day off for the team. He discovered a venue that was an hour and a half drive away. Once he finished his required duties, he spent an hour and fifteen minutes practicing with the sun setting in the background, which helped him. He left the practice session only after he had worked out all his frustrations and anxieties.

India’s most experienced active international cricketer, who started playing for India in August 2004, may be close to retiring from professional cricket. Despite this, he still feels a strong passion for the game and is determined to perform well for the team that has shown faith in him. He has been a part of all 17 seasons of the IPL, along with six other players. While he is often labeled a ‘part-time’ cricketer because he works as a commentator outside of the IPL matches, he doesn’t let that diminish his self-esteem. In fact, Karthik almost embraces this label and strives to prove to himself, more than anyone else, that he can compete with full-time cricketers, even when he’s considered part-time.

Karthik had a remarkable 2022 season with RCB, scoring 330 runs at a striking 183.33 as a finisher. Despite a dip in the following season, he is determined to make a lasting impact in his 17th and likely last IPL campaign by putting in exceptional performances.

In just seven games, Karthik scored 226 runs at a strike rate of 205.45. He stayed fit while commentating, skipped the final Test to play T20, worked on batting across India, and trained with Abhishek Nayar for mental aspects.

Just three weeks ago, it seemed unlikely that Karthik would even be considered for an international comeback. However, now it wouldn’t be surprising if he’s in contention for the T20 World Cup squad when selectors meet in two weeks. While some may view this as a step back considering the many wicketkeeping options, Karthik’s recent performances and experience make him a strong candidate.

During a thrilling match at Chinnaswamy Stadium, amidst numerous sixes and record-breaking moments, Karthik really shone. Despite facing a tough target of 288 runs, his explosive innings of 83 runs off just 35 balls injected new life into the chase, earning him loud cheers of ‘DK DK DK’ from the crowd.

His fearless batting style, which included a fantastic reverse sweep-pull shot, showcased his skill and ability to perform under pressure. It was a fantastic display that highlighted his top form, fitness, and undeniable talent, proving that he still has a lot to offer at the highest levels of cricket.
